Dialogues Across Nebraska

Dialogues In Your Community

Overview

Butler County
The Butler County dialogue brought together members of the communities of David City, Bellwood, Rising City, Brainard, Garrison, Surprise, and the rural areas of Butler County. David City hosted the dialogue.

Butler County has a population of over 8,600 people and is bordered on the north by the Platte River. Two great trails cross Butler County, the Old Mormon Trail and the subsequent overland route to California preceding the first settlements in the county established in 1857. The county was officially organized as such in 1868, one year before Nebraska's statehood.

"The contrast presented is most enchanting. Away to the southward and eastward lie the beautiful and charming valleys of the Big Blue and the Oak, marked in summer time by a thread-like continuation of green groves and plum thickets, winding in and out and through the nude plains. Approaching these, after crossing the table-land proper, a broad expanse of moderately rolling surface meets the eye, stretching out to the southward as far as it can reach, and including a region most admirably adapted to pasturage and agriculture." – Excerpt from http://www.kancoll.org/books/andreas_ne/butler/butler-p1.html Andreas' History of the State of Nebraska

Butler County hosted the Dialogues Across Nebraska team in August, 2006, and youth leaders from David City, Rising City, Brainard, and Ulysses worked with all five living generations to discover what makes Butler County a great place to live. This program has bred a new youth organization, Young Voices for Butler County. These young people will continue to work to ensure their area's future.
