Overview

Columbus
The establishment of Columbus began in March 1856. Columbus was chosen as the county seat of Platte county because it was on the main line of the Union Pacific Railroad and later became a hub for branch lines. When automobiles became preferred method of transportation, the old Mormon Trail was paved creating U.S. Highway 30 and U.S. Highway 81, making Columbus a major crossroads. Today, Columbus is the most highly industrialized city per capita in the state of Nebraska with manufacturing providing employment to nearly 5,500 area people.

Columbus Racetrack provides year round simulcast racing while the Pawnee Plunge Water Park, the newly opened water park features double flume slide, speed slide, and more. Columbus Public Schools, Lakeview Community Schools and High School, Columbus Catholic Elementary Schools, and Scotus High School make up the educational system in Columbus.
